Train for the Long Haul

The Endurance Paddling (Marathon) program involves all kinds of single and double-bladed craft travelling long distances. If you are looking to spend quality time on the water while mastering a highly efficient paddling stroke, this program is designed for you.

Whether you are preparing to race a 10 km local event, planning a long-distance backcountry canoe trip, or competing in an ultra-distance adventure race, an efficient stroke is crucial to preserving your energy and increasing your speed. Our coached sessions focus heavily on cardiovascular fitness and technique refinement.

Scenic Training Locations

To give our athletes the best variety of water conditions, our endurance practices take place in two primary locations: the open waters of the Collingwood Harbour, and the winding, scenic currents of the Nottawasaga River (near Klondike Road in Wasaga Beach).

Bonus: Free Open Paddle & Masters Sprint Racing Access!

Your Endurance registration acts as an all-access pass to the club’s fleet! With this membership, paddlers are welcome to participate in the club’s Open Paddle program for absolutely no additional fee. This allows you to use our SUPs, sprint canoes, kayaks, outrigger canoes, and marathon canoes during supervised Open Paddle hours to continue your training and travel through the natural landscape.

Equipment & Preparation

The club provides access to specialized long-distance boats, including marathon canoes and outrigger canoes. Because our members are highly dedicated, Endurance athletes are always welcome to get together outside of officially scheduled practice times to use the club’s boats for extra mileage.

What to Bring to Practice

Because you will be on the water for extended periods, preparation is key. Please bring:

  • A comfortable, Transport Canada-approved Personal Flotation Device (PFD). We have a wide selection of Personal Flotation Devices (PFDs), but feel free to bring your own if preferred.
  • A hydration pack or large, secure water bottle.
  • Energy gels or healthy snacks for mid-paddle fuelling.
  • Weather-appropriate athletic clothing and sun protection (hat, sunglasses, sunscreen).
  • A personal paddle (if you own one).

Endurance Paddling FAQs

Not at all! While many of our athletes use this program to train for 10km or ultra-distance adventure races, many others join simply to get an amazing workout, improve their technique for backcountry canoe tripping, and enjoy long-distance paddling with a group.

We use a mix of single and double-bladed craft designed to cover distance efficiently. This includes marathon canoes, outrigger canoes (OCs), and fast kayaks/surfskis.

Because we utilize both the Collingwood Harbour and the Nottawasaga River, our coaches and program leaders communicate directly with registered members to confirm the meeting location based on the daily wind and weather conditions.

Because your $400 Endurance fee includes your basic club membership, you are automatically cleared to attend our Open Paddle and Masters Sprint Racing sessions at the Watts’ Boathouse. Just show up during scheduled Open Paddle hours and enjoy the water!
